Project II

Integrated Decision Support  System for Farmers

Agriculture remains an important component for economic development in most African countries. This sector is a major contributor to the economy through the creation of employment, supply of raw materials for industry, generation of foreign exchange earnings and provision of food security. Other roles are social stabilisation, buffer during economic shocks, support to environmental sustainability, and cultural values associated with farming.

Green Waterhut as a result launch a number of initiatives to tackle farmers capability of adapting to these challenges:

1) Vulnerability Assessment maps for communities in Northern Ghana: This project looks at supporting vulnerable selected communities in the Northern Ghana to get better understanding of fast changing climate change  phenomena eg floods, droughts in their environment. The project will adopt the Public Participatory GIS (PPGIS) approach to help communities implement this project. This project is currently supported by Planet Action. 2) Evapotranspiration to the doorsteps of the farmer – A case of Kokoligu Community in the Upper Region, Ghana: This initiative is to help farmers to get the chance to understand the effect of evapotranspiration on their crop yield. The project will make use of satellite data and other modern GIS techniques to assist farmers to better understand this phenomenon. Also, farmers get help on how best they can reduce the effect of evapotranspiration during farming seasons for better crop yield. This project is currently being supported by Planet Action.  Find out more information about this  project >>

3) Integrated Decision Support System for Mobile Extension Services to Communities in the Northern Ghana: This projected supported by Group on Earth Observation (GEO) is a collaborative effort of Green WaterHut, Nature Today Group and Department of Civil Engineering, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
