Brief Report on Support received from Green WaterHut (GWH), GHANA and partners to Facilitate the Teaching and Learning of GIS and RS at the Department of Environment and Resource Studies, University of Development Studies.

16th November 2011

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) courses are designed to equip students with the requisite tools for solving contemporary Environmental and natural Resource issues. These courses are to also facilitate the teaching and learning of other environmental courses in the Department of Environment and Resource Studies, University of Development Studies(UDS), in order to make the students in the department more relevant in environmental issues. GWH shares this vision and has decided to support the teaching and learning of these courses as much as possible.

To demonstrate their commitment to this worthy course, GWH worked and collaborated with local partner Nature Today, Ghana and international partner (Planet Action International) to obtain and provide satellite images, books and software (ArcGIS and ENVI) to enable interested final year GIS students carryout meaningful research in the area of disaster management (e.g. flooding) and increasing agricultural yield (i.e. irrigation farming). Four groups of students are already exploring these materials for their project work besides the fact the materials now make teaching and learning of GIS and RS for the course lecturers and non-final year GIS/RS students easier and more practically interesting. This support is also part of the on-going projects currently undertaken  GWH and its partners on (1)  Evapotranspiration to the doorsteps of the farmer – A case of Kokoligu Community in the Upper Region, Ghana and (2) Vulnerability Assessment maps for communities in Northern Ghana.

On 1st October, 2011 the department received eleven (11) GIS books with ArcGIS software and tutorial CDs from GWH as part of their commitment to helping the teaching and learning of GIS and Remote Sensing in the Department of Environment and Resource Studies.
